DATA & SPREADSHEETS / CSV TO EXCEL GUIDE
Convert CSV to Excel online
Convert CSV to Excel when you need to view comma-separated data in a familiar spreadsheet. BFOTKit reads a CSV or other delimited text file, displays a preview of its rows and columns, and creates an XLSX workbook for download. You can review the imported data before saving it and adjust the settings if the file uses an unusual separator or text encoding. The conversion runs in your browser, so the selected file stays on your device.
How to convert CSV to Excel
Choose a .csv file, or select a .tsv or delimited .txt file. The converter detects a likely delimiter and encoding, then shows a preview. Check that each value appears under the intended heading. Choose a different separator if rows appear in one wide column or values have been split incorrectly. Set the first row as column headings or keep it as data. When the preview looks right, select Download Excel to export CSV to Excel as a new .xlsx workbook.
Check CSV to Excel columns and separators
CSV files do not always use commas, despite the name. Exports may use semicolons, tabs, or pipe characters, depending on the application and regional settings. The delimiter tells the parser where a column ends and another begins. Check the preview to confirm the CSV to Excel columns appear correctly. Quoted values are supported, including commas inside addresses, escaped quotation marks, and line breaks inside quoted text. If the preview looks unusual, try the separator used by the program that created the export.
Keep identifiers and original values
Opening a CSV directly in Excel can trigger automatic formatting. A product code such as 000472 may lose its leading zeros, a long account number may be rounded, or a date-like string may change format. BFOTKit writes values as text in the workbook to preserve their source characters. This helps protect postal codes, phone numbers, invoice references, tracking codes, and IDs. For calculations, convert numeric columns in Excel after checking the imported values.
Import CSV data into Excel with the right encoding
Text encoding affects how letters and symbols are stored. If names or descriptions display incorrectly, try another encoding and inspect the preview. The converter supports UTF-8, UTF-16, and Windows-1252, with automatic detection for common files. Once the text looks correct, convert CSV to Excel format and open the XLSX in Excel or another compatible spreadsheet app to sort, filter, and organize the rows.
What the CSV to Excel converter supports
The tool accepts CSV, TSV, and delimited TXT files with comma, semicolon, tab, and pipe separators. Choose whether the first row contains headings, preview the table, and save as XLSX. It processes one file at a time and does not combine multiple CSV files. Import data from CSV to Excel for review in a separate workbook; this tool does not upload records to a database or online store.
File size, privacy, and reviewing the workbook
Files can be up to 25 MB, with a limit of 200,000 rows and 200 columns. Large files may use substantial browser memory. Processing happens locally; files are not sent to BFOTKit. Compare a few rows with the source, especially IDs, dates, accented text, and rows with missing fields. The preview flags rows that differ from the widest row. When the data looks right, download the XLSX and continue in your spreadsheet app.
